Nikhil Pereira Kamath

Nikhil Lawrence Pereira-Kamath has over 15 years of experience in the dialysis space having previously run a non-for-profit organization, Youth That Care, whose mission was to provide assistance to the developing world via the establishment of dialysis centers. Youth That Care established dialysis centers across India and the first dialysis center in Burundi. Nik Co-Founded Africa Healthcare Network in 2015 with the goal of increasing access to care by increasing awareness and reducing the cost of care in the Sub-Saharan region while adhering to global standards of quality.

Previously, Nik worked in the private equity industry as an associate at Berkshire Partners, a Boston based investment firm with $11.0Bn+ in AUM. At Berkshire, Nik engaged in all aspects of the investment process, including Berkshire’s $2.1Bn acquisition and subsequent merger of Lightower Fiber Networks and Sidera Networks in 2013 and $875MM acquisition of the Portillo’s Restaurant Group in 2014. Additionally, Nik was a member of the Healthcare OnPoint Team – a core investment team that focuses on “getting smart” on the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Berkshire, he was an analyst at Morgan Stanley in the Healthcare Group where he focused primarily in biopharmaceuticals and healthcare services. Transactions at Morgan Stanley include the sale of Pharmasset to Gilead Sciences for $11.1Bn, sale of HealthDataInsights to HMS Holdings for $400MM, sale of Pharmaceutical Product Development to Carlyle and Hellman & Friedman for $3.9Bn. Prior to Morgan Stanley, he worked at Oxford Bioscience Partners where he worked as a research analyst, covering a portfolio company, FlowMedica. Ms. Jacqui Stewart

The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa NPC

Jacqui Stewart is the Chief Executive Officer of The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa NPC (COHSASA). She has worked in the public and private health care sectors in South Africa and England. Having qualified as a registered nurse in Cape Town she went on to specialise in Cardio-Thoracic nursing at the London Chest Hospital in London England. She ran the Heart Transplant Unit at Harefield Hospital, Middlesex for five years. From there she moved into a variety of managerial roles in the National Health Service at district, regional and national level. First within the nursing directorate in quality improvement and then in capital and service planning. She was involved in the inception of the purchaser / provider split in the NHS.

Biju Mohandas

Head, Health & Education, SSA & Global Sector Lead, Medical Devices

Biju Mohandas is an emerging markets investor with close to two decades of investing and operational experience in South Asia and Africa. He has directly led equity, quasi equity and debt transactions totaling c.$300 million as well as acquisitions and distressed asset turnarounds in healthcare, education, agribusiness and renewable energy sectors. As a director on corporate boards and investment and advisory committees in multiple markets, Biju has a track record of working with co-investors and management to develop and execute long term strategies, improve performance, structure turnarounds and of using his international experience and relationships to structure partnerships between global strategies and emerging markets companies. He is fascinated by the potential of technology to disrupt the delivery of shareholder and consumer value in healthcare and education sectors and spends his spare time studying this space.

In his current role Biju heads the Health and Education investment team for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Sub Saharan Africa. He is also their Global Sector Lead for Medical Devices. Biju and his team currently manage a c. $200 Million portfolio across 17 companies in these sectors in Sub Saharan Africa and will invest $70-80 million annually for the next three years to more than double assets under management. Before IFC, Biju was the East Africa Director of Acumen fund and was responsible for their East Africa related investments, operations and business development activities. He has an MBA from the Indian School of Business majoring in Analytical Finance and also served in the Indian Army.

Trevor Lovell

Professional Architect and Managing Director at Graceland Architects

Trevor Lovell is a Professional Architect and Managing Director at Graceland Architects. He has 15 years’ professional architectural experience in both public and private healthcare sectors. Trevor firmly believes that the successful development of a comprehensive PPP ecosystem in the context of the NHI will be critical to providing truly universal, quality healthcare.

He is currently involved in researching current PPP models and understanding where these have succeeded and where further work must be done to improve outcomes at small, medium and large scales.

His involvement with several paediatric-based projects highlights his interest in paediatric healthcare design. Recently completed projects include a Paediatric Transplant Unit; Paediatric Surgical Out Patient Department and Anorectal Clinic; and a Paediatric TB Exit Ward at the King Dinizulu Level 1 District Hospital, KZN.

Current projects include a Lactation Unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, a partnership project between the Gauteng Department of Health, a Non-profit Organisation and Private Funding.

Dr. Sarah Byakika

Commissioner Health Services Planning, Financing& Policy, Ministry of Health, Uganda

Public Health Specialist and Health Services Manager with vast experience of working in the public health sector starting as a Medical Officer in a Regional Referral Hospital, a District Health Officer and moved on tothe national level starting as Assistant Commissioner Quality Assurance and currently Commissioner Planning, Financing and Policy. She is also the Focal Person for the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme in Uganda.

Sarah has taken lead in development of various policies and national strategic plans for the health sector in Uganda. These include the Health Financing Strategy for Uganda which led to the development of the National Results Based Financing Framework in Uganda in preparation for health insurance.

Zaidah holds a Degree in Radiation Therapy as well as a Degree in Post-School Education and has been working in the field of Radiation Therapy for more than 25 years.

She started her career working as a Radiation Therapist at Groote Schuur Hospital where she eventually headed the Treatment Planning division and was engaged as a lecturer at the Academic facility training IAEA fellows as well as Student Radiation Therapists & Oncologists. After 10 years she moved into the industry, promoting Varian Oncology solutions since.

Dr. Elton Dorkin

Dr Elton Dorkin is a part-time member of faculty at GIBS since February 2020. His academic interests include leadership and strategy in general, and in the healthcare industry, in particular. He is also a part-time faculty member of the UKZN Department of Family Medicine.

He is a Director and Principal Consultant at Dr EP Dorkin & Associates, an independent healthcare-focussed management consultancy. Clients include Illovo Sugar Africa (Pty) Ltd and Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Attorneys. He is a member of the Board of Momentum Medical Scheme, the third largest open medical scheme in SA.

Prior to this he was the Chief Medical Officer of Illovo Sugar Africa (Pty) Ltd, responsible for healthcare operations in six African Countries and a former Medical Director at EOH Health and International SOS.

Dr. Omary Ubuguyu

Program Lead on National Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases under Ministry of Health in Tanzania

Dr. Omary Ubuguyu serves as Program Lead on National Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases under Ministry of Health in Tanzania. He is a psychiatrist by profession who spent over 10 years in clinical work, teaching and health administration. He has been serving as the Head of mental Health and Substance Abuse at the Ministry of Health for almost 10 months. He spent most of his career as Researcher and Mental health consultant at Muhimbili National Hospital and as honorary Lecturer at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, the largest and oldest Hospital and medical University in the country where he spent more than 12 years.

It is at the Ministry of Health where Dr. Ubuguyu makes a significant contribution to his nation by transforming the NCD unit from a small health unit at the ministry of health to a huge innovative and multisectoral department that will invest heavily on wellbeing of Tanzanians.

For 14 years of service, Dr. Ubuguyu has been supporting number of initiatives on services provision including training and supervision of community volunteers, staffs at mental health and addiction rehabilitation units, and introduction of mental health training to secondary school teachers. He spend many years to conduct school mental health programs for children with special needs especially autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. He worked very closely with Senator Stan Kutcher of Dalhousie University on establishment of School Mental Health Program and development of African School Mental Health Curriculum.

Eng. Sam S.B Wanda

Eng. Wanda is a Civil Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in Construction. He has, since 1996 when he joined the Ministry of Health Uganda, been involved in design, construction & installation, rehabilitation and maintenance of Health Infrastructure – Buildings, Equipment, Communication Facilities and Ambulance services {BECA} – for Health.

He has a wealth of experience in carrying out the above with funding from Government, AfDB, The World Bank, The EC, JICA, The NDF, The GEF, CDC and other Partners.

Since joining UNAMHE in 1996, Wanda has attended many International Conferences organised by the IFHE, SAFHE/CEASA & FEAHEA in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Africa.

Ms. Nokuzola Mtshiya

Head of Stakeholder Relations and Communications

Zola Mtshiya is the Head of Stakeholder Relations and Communications at the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa. She manages a diverse community of stakeholders in Government, government agencies, funding industry, pharmaceutical and Hospitals and other sectors within healthcare in more than 13 countries. Zola has over 20 years experience working in the Healthcare Industry, of which two years were in an executive role. She recently played an instrumental role in setting up the first ever Africa Health Federation SA, a multisectoral Public Private Partnership established to assist Government in the implementation of NHI and other health initiatives in South Africa.

Zola conceptualised and implemented various industry projects such as the Titanium Awards, that seek to recognise and celebrate excellence in healthcare. In 2016 Zola spearheaded the concept and implementation of the BHF Trustee Development programme accredited by Wits Business School, and pitched at NQF Level 07. This is a course designed to equip students with tools and strategies on how to improve the health status of medical scheme members; the ethics, roles & responsibilities of trustees.

She implemented the BHF360 into Healthcare Magazine and is editor in chief. This is a thought leadership magazine that aims to drive change in the industry. Following her passion to promote other women in healthcare. She launched a women in leadership dinner in 2017, a networking platform that enables women to connect with each other and share ideas and inspiration.

With skilful capability to plan and execute big events, she meticulously organises various events such as the Annual BHF conference. She also served in various conference organising committees to include; International Health Federation (IHF) conference in 2017, hosted in partnership with the south African Government; the CMS Fraud Waste and Abuse Summit and the Africa Health Federation (Kenya) Summit held in South Africa in 2018.

Idon-Nkhenso Sibuyi,is a public health practitioner having a special interest in Digital Health. He holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with specialisation in Medical Informatics from the University of South Africa and is currently writing for a Doctor of Technology (DTech) degree in Informatics at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. It was in this role that he participated in the conceptualisation and development of a business case for the revitalization of the hospital. Subsequent to this he served as Operations Manager of Impilo Consortium, the private party in the Public Private Partnership running the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, in which capacity he oversaw facilities management, information technology, health technology and the contractual relationship with the public sector client. Tebogo also served as a Clinical Executive at Qualsa Healthcare (a subsidiary of Metropolitan Health Group) where he was responsible for the managed healthcare offerings for several closed medical schemes including Police Services Medical Schemes (POLMED). Tebogo’s most recent role was in Life Healthcare as Hospital Manager, where he oversaw the conceptualisation and implementation of several multimillion infrastructure projects.

Dr Robert Ssekitoleko, completed his MEng Degree in Medical Engineering at Queen Mary University of London in 2007. He then held a Teaching Assistantposition at the same university for one year. Peter Mills

Business Development Manager - Healthcare and Lifesciences - Wipro Limited

Peter has a passion for improving the lives of Patients using Technology. Peter’s experience in Healthcare started with the South African National e.HR project and later evolved into the development and market business development of an enterprise Hospital Information System. This Cloud based Hospital Information System provides financial, human resource, billing and clinical information to some of the prominent private hospital groups in South Africa.

Peter also played a key role at NewBorns (NGO) Groote Schuur in creating a technology platform that ensured ophthalmologist visit coordination between mother, neonate and ophthalmologist. This platform has materially improved return visits to first world standards between ophthalmologist and neonate and reduced the risk of retinopathy of prematurity.

Peter has created and led Technology Healthcare strategies within a German Multi-National to evolve services past the basic technology building blocks. One of the key focus areas for Peter is the creation of proper technology design practices when hospital design is considered to ensure that services to the Patient can be delivered quickly and in a transparent manner. This includes the rendering of radiology images at bedside, tablet based bedside technologies, integration of processes to enhance the Patient experience and the fundamentals regarding the management of revenue leakage. These reference architectures include the optimisation of technology spend to cover the maximum number of use cases possible.

Today Peter works for Wipro Technologies South Africa as a Business Development Manager solving Customer problems in Africa across Providers, Payers, Laboratories, Medical devices and Pharmacare to find ways to reduce the cost of Healthcare to Customers and Patients.

Naseegh Long

Business Development, ACG Architects and Development Planners

Naseegh is an architect who is committed to designing and implementing building projects that contribute to creating a sustainable built environment that serves a great audience. His focus has been on public architecture and he has developed this passion while working for Transport and Public Works for a number of years. After many years in the public sector, Naseegh joined ACG Architects as the Business Development Manager and is also one of the senior project architects. Naseegh has worked on a number of projects that extend from infrastructure to health and educational buildings among other projects. Naseegh has a strong entrepreneurial focus and is always looking at creative ways in unlocking new projects and collaborating with other professionals to tackle current challenges and find innovative solutions. Michelle is a Nephrology trained Nurse who joined Fresenius Medical Care in 2006 as a Business Unit Manager. In her role as Business Unit Manager, she was responsible for implementing strategies to improve service delivery and operating quality, efficient, cost effective dialysis centres.

Michelle later took over the Business Development Sector of the company with her focus on establishing models to operate dialysis units under different economic sectors, being mainly Public Private Partnerships, enterprise development and acquisitions.

Michelle has operated and managed many dialysis units on a large scale. She is instrumental in the management and operation of the Polokwane Kidney Dialysis Centre in Limpopo and the Mbabane Kidney Dialysis Centre in Swaziland, both Public Private Partnerships.

Hélène Rossouw

CEO of the Spear Health Foundation

Hélène Rossouw is the CEO of the Spear Health Foundation, but also director of Biomedhelix and advisor to MediCoop CFI. Hélène has been working in the health industry for the past ten years. With almost 20 years of government experience, she understands government processes and specialises in coordinating international multi-partner projects, stakeholder communication and crisis communication management. Hélène is a qualified public relations practitioner, with several post-degree qualifications in Public Relations, Strategic Marketing, Facilitation, Protocol and International Etiquette, as well as Cultural Communication.

Dr. Gail Andrews

COO - National Department of Health

Dr. Gail Andrews has been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the department from 1 August. She holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of the Western Cape (2004) and Master of Public Health degree from the University of Wales, College of Medicine (1991). She graduated from the University of the Western Cape with a BCur degree (1981) and an Hons BCur (cum laude) (1986), with specialisation in Community Nursing Science and Psychiatric Nursing. She has extensive senior management experience in policy, programming and research, plus expertise in public health; specifically the intersection of health systems research and strengthening with women’s health, maternal health, and HIV and AIDS.

Mr. Benjamin Mokgothu

Director and General Manager Operations

Mr. Benjamin Mokgothu is a registered Professional Construction Project Manager with over 12 years’ experience in Health Facilities Planning. After initially working as an Assistant Manager on the Soshanguve College Building Project, he joined the Department of Health North West Province as a Programme Manager responsible for Clinic Building Programme, Hospital Revitalisation Infrastructure Planning component as well as Maintenance of Health Infrastructure.

Mr Mokgothu later joined the Department of Health Free State Province as Senior Manager Infrastructure Management and his portfolio included Hospital Revitalisation Programme, Clinic Building Programme, Maintenance Programme as well as Contract Management.

He has contributed as a Health Planner and Project Manager in various projects including Moses Kotane Hospital, Vryburg Hospital, Mantsopa District Hospital and Bloemfontein Forensic Mortuary among others.
